In England today, over 1.7 million pupils are identified as having Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) that’s nearly 20 percent of all pupils. ([Gov.uk, SEN stats 2024-25]) Explore Education Statistics The number of pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) has also risen steadily, now accounting for about 5.3 percent of pupils, up from 4.8 percent the year before. Explore Education Statistics What this means for schools is clear: the complexity of need is increasing, and demand is surging. Without skilled, specialist support, pressure on mainstream teachers and support staff becomes unsustainable.

Yet many schools are still trying to manage these growing pressures using traditional means temporary cover, supply staff, or hoping existing staff pick up skills on the job. The problem with that approach is two-fold. First, it leads to inconsistency for pupils, especially those with SEND, who need stable, well-trained adults they trust. Second, it places heavy burdens on existing staff, contributing to burnout and turnover just when schools most need experienced people to stay.

That is where our Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship becomes more than an option, it becomes a strategic advantage.

This pathway is designed to build high-level skills among Teaching Assistants in areas like SEND, social emotional wellbeing, curriculum intervention, and leadership. Providers making the standard include core competencies of assessment, overcoming barriers to learning, communication, mentorship and much more. Educational and Sporting Futures – GOV.UK Staff who complete this apprenticeship do not simply become “helpers” they become specialists, able to support pupils with complex needs, mentor less experienced colleagues, contribute to behaviour management strategies, and help close attainment gaps.

What makes this especially powerful for schools is that it helps you plug gaps in provision. Rather than relying on external supply staff who may not have SEND expertise, you can grow capability from within. It’s about retention as well as recruitment. A TA who invests time, effort and sees a route to progress is more likely to stay. That stability yields better pupil outcomes, fewer disruptions, and improved staff morale. For leadership, that means fewer reactive hires, fewer inspection concerns, and a more consistent culture of learning.

There are also practical benefits of cost and flexibility. The apprenticeship can be funded via the Apprenticeship Levy for those schools that pay it; for non-levy schools, government co-investment means contribution costs are significantly reduced. The standard includes several specialist routes, so training can be adapted to your school’s particular needs whether SEND, literacy, SEMH, or curriculum intervention. As accountability and expectations increase, schools that do nothing risk falling behind. The gap in outcomes for pupils with EHCPs is still wide children in primary and secondary phases with EHCPs can be many months behind their peers in terms of progress.
